In the 1970's, Tuscan winemakers were frustrated that Italian wine law was moving much more slowly than their creativity and innovation.
So they went ahead and made great wine anyway.
Out of this maverick tradition came unsanctioned "Super Tuscan" wines that turned the wine world upside down. Blending native Sangiovese grapes with non-indigenous Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, these winemakers created wines that had critics raving.
Inspired by their pioneering example, Justin created 2017 JB "Terracotta," named for the red clay roofs ubiquitous in Florence and Tuscany.
Made with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes for "Terracotta" are 100% Virginian-grown, adding our region's unique terrior to this great tradition.
The nose of this wine is spectacular, offering an array of sensations that delight without overpowering. Lavender, vanilla and mocha accent a floral bouquet of aromas underscored by a distinct smokiness.
Medium-bodied, "Terracotta" is velvet on the palate, preceding a subtle bite on the sweet-tannic finish. Flavors of black cherries, blackberries and juicy plum are underscored again by a smoky, rounded sensation through to the finish.
This is definitely the perfect wine to pair with a smoky, savory dish, especially smoked meats. A Texas-style smoked brisket would be the perfect match; try smoked pork shoulder or smoked grilled vegetables as well!
