Story & Heritage

Vision for the Valley

James Charles Bogaty had a vision for the Shenandoah Valley to produce internationally-renowned wines, and in 1995 he and his wife, Della, bought a 100-acre tract of land on the banks of the Shenandoah River, west of Berryville. In 2000, James and Della opened Veramar Vineyard, becoming the 63rd winery in Virginia. It has since grown to produce over 10,000 cases of wine a year.

Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail

The Bogatys were one of the “first families” of the modern era of Virginia winemaking. James Charles Bogaty founded the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail to share with the world what an incredible viticultural region the Valley is, and its potential for producing world-class vintages.

Justin Becomes Winemaker

James and Della’s son, Justin, found his own passion for wine and came to Virginia to become our winemaker in 2001, after receiving a certificate in enology from UC Davis. Every season he becomes more passionate about exceeding even the highest expectations for the quality that this region can produce.

Seven Consecutive Awards

Decanter Magazine awarded the family seven consecutive medals for Cabernet Franc, competing against the best wines in the world

Profiled in American Wine

Jancis Robinson, the internationally-renowned UK wine critic, recognized Veramar Vineyard as one of the predominant wineries in the Shenandoah Valley in her authoritative book, American Wine: The Ultimate Companion.

Export to the UK

In 2007, the story of Virginia wine began to come full circle, as we were one of the first modern wineries in Virginia to export our wines back to the United Kingdom. Our vintages have been met with rave reviews from critics like Steven Spurrier, Jancis Robinson, Oz Clarke and many others.

Bogati Bodega Opens

In 2010, the family opens a second winery, Bogati Bodega (now called Bogati Winery), to continue our journey of innovative, meticulous winemaking with a South American theme. Our wines there quickly became beloved by wine-lovers everywhere.

Chardonnay Reviewed by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2015 James Charles Chardonnay was reviewed by The Wine Advocate, receiving a rating of 89 points. The Advocate said it was "fresh, clean and fruity--that's what you expect from young Chardonnay. What gives it a bit of distinction is the structure and the lift to the fruit, the feeling that it is also lively and lingering, not just fruity."
